At the southern end of Muriwai's windswept, rugged coastline stands Otakamiro Point, the site of one of New Zealand's few gannet (takapu) breeding colonies. From August through to March each year around 2500 gannets nest here, providing endless entertainment and joy to residents and visitors alike. This intrepid sea bird is undoubtedly one of Muriwai's most famous icons, and as such, 'The Gannet' is a fitting title for our local newsletter. Welcome to our special corner of the world.
